Metal Folding Brisbane
Overview
Our Folding department consists of 6 x state-of-the-art CNC Press Brakes capable of folding up to 3m in length and a maximum force of 130 tons. All parts are pre-programmed in our offline 3D folding software to check for feasibility and most importantly, to ensure that the highest tolerances are achieved.
MTI has an extensive tooling library, allowing us to fold a diverse range of complex components. In addition to our 6 x CNC Press Brakes, MTI has also invested in an automated panel bending machine. Please click on the Panel Bending section to discover the benefits of this technology. You will not be disappointed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between metal folding and bending?
Metal folding can be used on thicker sheets of metal while metal bending is best for thinner sheets. Metal folding is also considered a better option for larger pieces. Both use different techniques to form metal into different shapes.
Is bending metal better than welding?
Bending sheet metal is often better than welding as it allows the metal to maintain its integrity. By pressing the metal into its desired shape, rather than welding separate pieces, there is also less metal waste.
What types of products can you make with metal folding?
Sheet metal bending and folding can be used to create a range of different products. Metal folding services are often used to make brackets, shelving, cabinet components, boat parts and much more.
Does the material impact the effectiveness of metal folding?
The thickness of the metal can impact the effectiveness of folding. Thicker sheets of metal can sometimes weaken with bending or warp from additional pressure. The right machines can bend thicker sheets into shape with minimal distress to the material.
Benefits of Metal Folding
Lighter Products
Products made by bending sheet metal are often lighter than products made with other techniques, such as welding. As the metal sheet is bent into shape it can hold its weight without additional pieces added on. This results in stronger and lighter products.
Accuracy
With the latest technology and metal folding capabilities, sheet metal can be bent with precision. This allows the metal to be pressed into unique shapes. With high-quality machines, you can be sure the details won’t be missed.
Efficiency
Because metal folding only requires the main piece of metal and the machine, there are fewer steps involved in the process. This means metal can be pressed into shape quickly and efficiently. This often results in faster completion rates than other manufacturing techniques.
How It Works
Materials
The first step to metal folding is selecting the material. The thickness of the material will determine the type of machine and folding techniques used. Metal folding can be used on a range of metals including stainless steel, mild steel, copper, brass and aluminium.
Brake press
The brake press will have the fold or bend specifications added to the machine along with the material. Once active, the machine will clamp the metal and fold it by pressing it between a punch and die. New laser angle measurement methods ensure parts are folded to the correct angle first time by compensating for any material springback. This can save up to 35% in cycle time!
Completion
Our expert team monitors the bending process to ensure the metal is bent correctly. Likewise, we monitor for warping and other errors. Once complete the metal is removed from the machine and inspected before delivery.
